- Part I:
"Why should our interests or hobby include Indian
classical music?"
by Haresh Bakshi
There
are many reasons. One, we are Indians, with melodies
streaming into our ears right from the birth. So, our
music comes to us easily and naturally. Our classical
music is part of a continuum stretching back some 4,000
years.
Two,
as Indians, we should be proud of our cultural heritage.
Have you noted, all over the world, how each individual,
each community, each nation, each people displays, and
takes pride in, its culture, its language, its customs?
That pride gives them unity, strength and prosperity.
Three,
not only because of the glorious past, but also because
of the assured and brilliant future: As an important
part of the World Music. The world music is the largest
single genre of the current music in the world.
Four.
Current practices in meditation, relaxation, treatment
and prevention of diseases, mental illness and physical
disabilities, music is getting recognition in the Western
world. One example: Alzheimer patients, who do not recollect
the year or their children's names, can remember the
words to favorite songs. Also, music is now considered
valuable in childhood development.
Five.
Our own music is the most dignified and illustrious
entrance to music of other countries. Six. Just plain
entertainment value. Indian classical music is highly
entertaining and enjoyable. And, unlike most other musical
forms of entertainment, Indian classical music is not
short-lived; it has an everlasting value.
