Joydeep started learning and exploring the hidden joys of music from the tender age of four under the able guidance of the great Sangeet acharya, Late Pt. Anil Roy Chaudhury, Late Pt. Radhika Mohan Moitra and Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta (all belonging to the Shahajahanpur Sarod Gharana).

He specialises in maintaining the purity of ragas while displaying the most rare playable materials which are the assets of the gharana founded by Late Ustad Mohammed Ameer Khan. At present, Joydeep is under the tutelage of the versatile Pt. Bimalendu Mukherjee, a doyen of the famous Imdadkhani Gharana of sitar and surbahar. He has also learnt the technique of laykari and its applications in Sarod from Late Pandit Amal Sarkar, Ustad Shaukat Ali Khan and Pt. Anil Palit.

Joydeep is a recepient of many awards since his childhood including Govt. of India's Talent Search Scholarship. In 1978, he won the AIR competition (instrumental category), obtained a sangeet visharad at the age of 15, Sangeet Praveen (M.Mus.) from Prayag Sangeet Samiti, Allahabad and won a gold medal. In 1991, he also got a Surmani from Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai.

In 1988, he was invited to participate in the historical Sarod festival at Delhi, organised by Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Memorial Society. He has performed at various cities of India and abroad. Joydeep is now a senior lecturer in Sarod at Indira Kala Sangeet University, Khairagarh (M.P.) He is also an A grade artiste of AIR and Doordarshan.
