PRIVATE FM RADIO. FM?? Free Music!
Most FM radio stations in the Indian metro cities have
completed a year of existence, despite of high license
fees charged by the Government. And all of them (except
the Government) have made losses.
Traditionally, radio has promoted music cassette and
CD sales across the globe. How about India then? Forget
revival ; the already recession-hit music industry has
been hit further by FM!! To most, 'FM' stands for 'Free
Music' and not Frequency Modulation. "What's that
anyways?!"
When you listen to the same "latest" film
songs on all your radio stations, aired 5 times a day
by each, at different time slots - for free, will you
be motivated to buy that album?
Can we blame FM stations for reduction in album sales
at music stores, which now sell more of greeting cards
and stationery than music? Should each FM station specialise
in a particular genre of music? Or is it the kind of
music being churned out so bad in itself that is not
attracting people towards their 'favourite' music store?
