In
1947, Sangeet Kendra (Centre for Music) located in Ahmedabad,
India, initiated a programme to promote the tradition
of Indian art music.
After
the second world war, magnetic tape recorders were available
in India. Sangeet Kendra took advantage of this opportunity
and documented comprehensively the various genres and
vocal styles as represented by the best and authentic
masters of the time.
Today,
Sangeet Kendra has approximately 500 hours of music
which gives music students and researchers to have access
to the Hindustani Classical Music of the last century.
In
addition, Sangeet Kendra has recordings of invaluable
live concerts, an excellent collection of 78 RPMs dating
back to the early days of the Gramaphone in India. It
also has LPs of the great masters of the North and South.
The material of the archives has been now digitised
by Sudeep Audio and is supported by a detailed database.
Sangeet
Kendra holds music concerts at its venue. These are
organised by SudeepAudio.com.
Research
and listening facilities are available at the centre
in Ahmedabad. Selected material is going to be published
soon.
