 About the Artiste

Sohan Nilkanth,Ahmedabad

Sohan Nilkanth is a Sarod player with a difference! He is chiefly an architect. But sarod playing is as important to this young and talented artiste as building homes.

Sarod is an ancient stringed instrument made of carved wood, covered with sheep skin and has a fretless fingerboard. It is plucked with a plectrum.

Inspite of his hectic schedule as an architect, Sohan has performed at several concerts. His initial training was under Shri Shashikant Gundani at Ahmedabad. He is presently under the guidance of Pt. Rajeev Taranath (Bangalore). Pt. Taranath is a renowned sarod player and a disciple of Maestro Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.

Sohan is also a faculty advisor for SPIC MACAY, Ahmedabad. A visiting professor at the famous school of architecture in this city, he has performed occassionally with kathak dances of Kadamb Centre for Dance and Music at Trivandrum, Bhopal and Bangalore. He has even composed music for a short film for the Gujarat Rural Housing Finance Corporation.

Among public concerts, Sohan has performed at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London ; Sur Samvardhan at Pune ; Hamara Utsav at Kolkata ; Sur Milap at Bhavnagar ; Sur Singar at Ahmedabad and others. He has held private performances for small to medium sized audiences arranged by individuals and organisations. He continues to enthrall the audiences wherever he has played and holds lecture demonstrations at various institutions such as IIMA, NID, CEPT, etc.
