 About the Artiste

Babulal Gandharva,Mumbai

Born on 15th April, 1951 in Dewas, Madhya Pradesh, Babulal plays the BELA BAHAAR. His father Shri Kashiramji was a well-known Sarangi player of the state. At the age of seven, Babulal started learning vocal music and sarangi playing under his father's guidance. After his matriculation, Babulal started learning the violin under Pt. S. G. Ranade. Since 1979, Babulal permanently settled in Mumbai and it was here that he created his unique instrument - the Bela Bahaar. The thought of making this instrument came to him after he felt that there were some shortcomings in the Sarangi which his father used to play. Bela Bahaar is a pure combination of violin and sarangi. It gives the tonal effect of the Sarangi because of the 22 sympathetic strings attached to a violin. It is highly suitable for "Ragdari Sangeet" as a solo and accompanying instrument. Babulal and his instrument were approved by AIR and Doordarshan, where he is an A grade artiste. In 1987, he got an opportunity to learn under the Sarangi maestro, Pt. Ram Narayan for about three years. From his guru's inspiration, he gained more confidence and excelled in the field of music. And today, he accompanies well known artistes at various concerts.
