Nirmalya acquired his initial knowledge of Dhrupad Dhamar from the late Prof. Nemai Chand Boral, who was disciple of Ustad Nazir Moinuddin Dagar. He is undertaking training from the able patronage of Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar.

Alongwith being a grade 'A' Dhrupad Dhamar singer on AIR, TV, Nirmalya is carrying on research work on Dhrupad. He has attained a Masters Degree in Music.

He has also taught Dhrupad at faculty of music and fine arts of Delhi University. Currently, he is teaching students from India and abroad.

Nirmalya stood first in the all India AIR competition in 1979. He has received the Navdeep award from the Navdeep Pratishtan from Ahmedabad ; the Surmani award from the Surshringar Samsad of Mumbai. He has also received a senior fellowship from the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India, for Dhrupad singing. Nirmalya has performed in many prestigious concerts of the country and abroad.
