 About the Artiste

Piu Sarkhel,Rajkot

orn in 1965 at Kolkata, Piu Sarkhel is one of today's very few female artists representing the Indore gharana of Hindustani Classical Vocal Music.

Piu has been receiving training under the tutelage of her father, Shri Kamal Bandhopadhyay, who was a close associate and beloved disciple of the late Ustad Amir Khan of Indore. The late Ustad used to stay with her family at Kolkata and she enjoyed the rare opportunity of listening to him since childhood.

With experienced training and style of Ustad Amir Khan, Piu possesses a very tuneful voice that fluently moves in three octaves ; she has a keen sense of rhythm and a tremendous command over laya and taal.

Piu has developed her own techniques in voice modulation over experimentation in the last 15 years.

She has performed throughout India in concerts like Durgapur Music Conference (1985) ; Bhavanipur Sammelan (1995) ; Sangeet Research Academy (1998) ; NCPA (2001) ; Haridas Sangeet Sammelan (2002) ; Ustad Amir Khan Sammelan (2002).

Piu also has worked in the research wing with Gujarat Sangeet Natak Academy, conducted a voice training workshop at Rajkot. She has also received the Surmani award from Sur Singar Samsad, Mumbai.
