{"id":1147,"date":"2019-11-06T10:00:07","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T04:30:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/blog\/?p=1147"},"modified":"2020-07-02T07:26:44","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T01:56:44","slug":"shiamak-davar-provides-a-futuristic-meaning-to-modern-dance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/shiamak-davar-provides-a-futuristic-meaning-to-modern-dance\/","title":{"rendered":"Shiamak Davar provides a futuristic meaning to modern dance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div>\n<p>In modern dance, as in English language, \u201c<strong>selcouth<\/strong>\u201d is defined as \u201cstrange\u201d, \u201cunusual\u201d, and \u201crare\u201d and, at the same time, is also defined as \u201cmarvellous\u201d and \u201cwondrous\u201d and that is precisely how dance aficionado Shiamak Davar\u2019s \u2018Sel-Couth\u2019 performance to a capacity audience at Mumbai\u2019s NCPA, on November 3, 2019 could be objectively described.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The performance, like most other Shiamak Davar staged\ninitiatives, commenced with an impromptu speech that dwelt from his faith [<em>Parsi<\/em>]\nto his friends [names were mentioned here with a rider stating that \u201cI am not\nhere to embarrass you!\u201d], which was absolutely hilarious, an extreme to the\nseriousness of what was soon to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your perspective, the colour of the setting was\nfuturistic and yet, paradoxically, white, as the dance troupe was depicted with\nclean-shaven scalps. Although the sets were light, yet the lighted sets were\nheavily reflected with shades, intermittently focusing on dancers, either solo\nor in clusters, who were choreographed in a manner that continuously shifted\nfrom the stage into the aisles of the auditorium in what turned out to be an\nobvious extension. The dance movements remained unexpected and the speed at\nwhich they were demonstrated often left the eyes of the viewers stupefied, but certainly\nnot weary. That, then, was precisely the charm of the choreography which was a fluid mix of ballet and modern dance, with a significant\namount of creative floorwork showcasing the remarkable strength and flexibility\nof every dancer who, as was immediately evident, was literally perspiring for\nperfection but, simultaneously, indulging in their passion too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Sel-Couth-performers-clothed-in-a-whiter-shade-of-pale-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Sel-Couth-performers-clothed-in-a-whiter-shade-of-pale-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Sel-Couth-performers-clothed-in-a-whiter-shade-of-pale-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Sel-Couth-performers-clothed-in-a-whiter-shade-of-pale-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Sel-Couth-performers-clothed-in-a-whiter-shade-of-pale-640x427.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Sel-Couth-performers-clothed-in-a-whiter-shade-of-pale.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Shiamak had earlier warned of a disturbing video\nthat would be shown during the dance sequence, what was finally broadcast was\ntaken to another level as it focused on the exploitation of women \u2013 with\nstatistics to support the backdrop \u2013 and espoused an opportunity for the viewer\nto make a change. Shiamak\u2019s philosophies could not have been more precise, and\nbravo to him for taking it to the public!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The music mainly took to the genius of singers Adele and George\nMichael too, whose premature demise still creates a vacuum in popular sound,\nwith appropriate Hindi music also brought into the sound scape, as required, to\nprovide distinctive musical direction that ran from the west to the east.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans of ballet and modern dance \u2013\nand converts alike \u2013 were truly treated to an amazing m\u00e9lange of both dance\nforms with choreographer Shiamak Davar presenting an illustration of his\nincredibly rich choreography which was, without a doubt, energetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The only downside<\/em> to the journey, if any, was the quality of sound as playing the music loud did not necessarily offset its deficiencies and it may be the usage of external speakers, not the house PA system, which could be a corrective step for the future. Nevertheless, nothing should take away the 29-odd years of presenting the annual \u2018Sel-Couth\u2019 from Shiamak Davar\u2019s passion for excellence, which remained untarnished as the 45-minute act remained hard hitting with its innovative dance steps, and its social message that now remains more relevant than ever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Sel-Couth\u2019 was indeed an\ninspiring piece of modern dance that illustrated Shiamak\u2019s incredible talent in\ntranslating seemingly static forms into ones with energy and purpose as the props\nto emphasize the dancers\u2019 athletic forms were specifically custom-made for the\nevents showcased.
