And how to decide upon and use such sound equipment better on their campus \/ auditoriums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">In many cases, the sound vendor throws in his own ideas and could end up guiding students on where to stand on stage, what to do or not while using the sound equipment. And this may not be entirely true! Many feel intimidated by so much &#8220;gear&#8221; and thus donot approach the operator also! So what does one do?!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The basics explained here will help you negotiate better with vendors and hopefully help you improve the performances on stage:\u00a0<em>audio-wise<\/em>. <strong>The end-result?<\/strong>\u00a0Give your audience a better experience of seeing you all put up a great event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 8pt;\">Note: the images in these articles have been borrowed from the Internet and are the property of their respective owners.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #ff0000;\">PUBLIC ADDRESS (P.A.) SYSTEM<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Each PA system consists of a mixing board (mixer), sound processing equipment (microphones, stands, cables), power amplifiers, speakers, sub-woofers\u2026 And a sound operator. In situations where power fluctuations are possible, a generator is also added to the list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The events at your school \/ college could be of any kind: a speech \/ musical show \/ drama \/ dance or a mix of all.\u00a0 Based on factors like the venue (outdoor \/ indoor), audience strength, etc. and your event&#8217;s content helps the sound vendor decide on the list of equipment to bring and setup.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #ff0000;\"><strong>MICROPHONE BASICS<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Microphones\u00a0(mics) are a type of transducer &#8211; a device which <em>converts<\/em> acoustical energy (sound waves) into electrical energy (the audio signal). Different types of\u00a0microphone\u00a0have different ways of converting energy, but they all share one thing in common: <u>The diaphragm<\/u>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/dynamic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-466 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/dynamic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"172\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/dynamic.jpg 310w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/dynamic-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/dynamic-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 172px) 100vw, 172px\" \/><\/a>DYNAMIC<\/strong> MICS<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Have relatively simple construction, and are therefore economical and rugged.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Are most commonly used for stage shows in schools and even music concerts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">They may or may not have an On\/Off switch.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Are usually wired.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ideal for vocals and drums.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/condenser.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-462 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/condenser.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"148\" height=\"98\" \/><\/a>CONDENSER<\/strong> MICS<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Are based on an electrically-charged diaphragm\/backplate assembly which forms a sound-sensitive capacitor (historically called a \u2018condenser\u2019).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Most commonly used in recording studios and <u>controlled<\/u> environments like concert halls. They provide higher sound quality than dynamic mics.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Can also be kept suspended from the ceiling in plays \/ dramas to cover more area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Can be wired or wireless too. Are a better choice for acoustic guitars.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Very sensitive to sound signals from quite a distance also.\u00a0So these have to be turned off with the switch (if any), when not in use.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><u>TYPICAL MIC TERMS TO KNOW<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/leakage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-478 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/leakage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"172\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/leakage.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/leakage-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/leakage-640x327.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>1. Leakage<\/strong>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Each microphone captures sound signals from a distance source. So a guitar mic can capture the loud sounds of a drum being played near it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Hence it is important to keep musical instruments (especially drums) in a particular style on stage to avoid \u201cleakages\u201d into another mic, and avoid <u>muffled<\/u> audio. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Too many mics on stage should also be avoided being very close to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>2. Feedback<\/strong>:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/feedback.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-467 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/feedback.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/feedback.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/feedback-300x110.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/feedback-640x234.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 369px) 100vw, 369px\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This is the condition that occurs when an amplified sound enters a microphone and is re-amplified until a steady howl or <u>whistle<\/u> is heard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So never go ahead of a speaker box with mic in hand, or keep speakers too loud either.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>3.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/directions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-479 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/directions.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/directions.jpg 430w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/directions-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a>Omni<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><em>Omni<\/em>-directional microphones\u00a0pick up sound with equal gain from all sides or directions of the\u00a0microphone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This means that whether a user speaks into the\u00a0microphone\u00a0from the front, back, left or right side, the\u00a0mic will record the signals all with equal gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; color: #ff0000;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/wedge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-473 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/wedge.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"277\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/wedge.jpg 326w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/wedge-300x220.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">WEDGE <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">(or Foldback) stage monitor<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This &#8220;monitor&#8221; reproduces the sounds of the performance and directs them towards the on-stage performers to help hear the instruments and vocals. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The audience listens to this same audio, but from the PA speakers facing them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Keep atleast 3 wedges on stage &#8211; Left, Centre and Right corners. Usually lead instrument players need one.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">These monitors usually are balanced differently. But in school or college or low budget scenario, the balancing remains the same as the PA output.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">The PA should ideally have a proper speaker distribution system for better sound. This is highly dependent on factors like closed venue or open to sky amphitheatre, the size of the venue, audience strength. The decision is usually taken by the sound vendor. And again is budget dependent.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Instead of having a costly distributed system,<strong> a better and economical solution<\/strong> would be to get the PA in the correct position &amp; preferably height.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/distribution.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-463 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/distribution.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"339\" \/><\/a><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>an example of a distributed speaker system<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-size: 18pt; color: #ff0000;\"><strong><u>DO\u2019s and DON&#8217;Ts on-stage<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>1.<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/michold1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-469 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/michold1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"95\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/michold1.jpg 464w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/michold1-300x147.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a>A microphone is neither an ice-cream cone nor a lollipop &#x1f60a;\u00a0So do not hold it like one. Doing so makes your voice sound thin!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Ideal distance<\/strong> between mic and mouth: 3 to 6 inches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>2.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/michold3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-471 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/michold3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/michold3.jpg 466w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/michold3-300x129.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px\" \/><\/a><\/strong>Hold the mic (cordless or wired) from its middle portion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Grasp it with all your fingers. But don\u2019t squeeze it hard either.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Ideal angle<\/strong> <u>while speaking<\/u>: 45 degrees (rear-end towards the floor).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>3. <\/strong>When there is a gap between use of a <strong>cordless mic<\/strong>, keep its switch <strong>OFF<\/strong>. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Else everything you speak backstage will be heard by the audience!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>4. Before<\/strong> an announcer speaks (or <u>even comes<\/u>) on stage, make sure the mic switch is kept <strong>ON<\/strong>. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Else it becomes embarrassing to fumble with the switch while on stage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>5.<\/strong> Do not tap the mic with your fingers, or blow into it, to check if it is on or not.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Check the on\/off status<\/strong> by speaking words into the mic like \u201c<em>Check 1-2-3<\/em>\u201d, or \u201c<em>Hello parents<\/em>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>6.<\/strong> Do not cover a mic with your hand when talking to someone else on \/ off stage. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If you want to <em>clear your throat<\/em> or cough, do it by keeping your mouth away from the mic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>7. Adjusting height<\/strong> of a microphone <strong>stand<\/strong>.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Based on the next act, keep the height of mic stands pre-adjusted if possible, as per the performer\u2019s height. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Instead of the child adjusting the height of the stands, the volunteer(s) can quickly, but quietly (no shoes on), come on stage and do this. Some practice on how to do this during rehearsals helps.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/choirmic.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-461 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/choirmic.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"339\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/choirmic.png 508w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/choirmic-300x144.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><\/a><strong>8.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><u>For group (chorus) singing<\/u><\/strong>, position the children and mics as seen in this example and distances mentioned. <em>The Mic angle and the stand height<\/em> should also be properly set.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">An ideal solution for group singing on stage is <strong>suspended mics<\/strong> &#8211; if it is possible to do so. Condenser ones are preferred to cover more area on stage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">If there are say 6 children, keep three kids in front and three taller ones behind them. Keep 2 mics suspended 1 feet above their heads, 2 feet apart and hanging a little ahead of the first row. The children should stand a little behind these mics and sing at full voice. They should not look up towards the mic while singing. Extrapolate the number of mics for more children in the singing group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/guitarmic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-468 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/guitarmic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a><strong>9.<\/strong> <strong>For acoustic guitar miking<\/strong>, the safest place to point the mic is the area where the guitar&#8217;s neck and body meet at a distance of 3-4 inches. Condenser mic is recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/drummic.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-464 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/drummic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"173\" height=\"178\" \/><\/a><strong>10.<\/strong> For miking a <strong>Djembe or any single drum<\/strong> instrument, keep it at a distance of 6-8 inches to avoid hands hitting the mic, and allowing free playing of the instrument.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/drummic2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/drummic2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/drummic2.jpg 367w, https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/drummic2-300x253.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><em>&#8230;a professional drum miking setup<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>11. <\/strong>Befriend the sound operator. And call him by his or her name, and not as \u201c<em>soundwala bhaiyya<\/em>\u201d. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Those students \/ teachers <strong>assisting the operator<\/strong> should try and make him feel that he is a part of the show. And he is. This will ensure you get better co-operation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>12. <\/strong><u>For the <strong>Video camera<\/strong> setup<\/u>: Get the audio output from the mixing board into the camera <strong>directly <\/strong>for best results. The videographer should not record the events with the camera mic as far as possible. A balanced audio cable with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/use-of-direct-injection-di-box\/\">DI (Direct Injection) box<\/a> in between the mixer and camera input is highly recommended for equipment safety.
