{"id":952,"date":"2019-06-10T10:14:32","date_gmt":"2019-06-10T04:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/blog\/?p=952"},"modified":"2020-07-02T07:26:44","modified_gmt":"2020-07-02T01:56:44","slug":"events-transcendence2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sudeepaudio.com\/saundcheck\/events-transcendence2\/","title":{"rendered":"Transcendence of two musical worlds"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div>\n<p>A 24-minute delayed commencement to an Indian concert is not\nonly a pleasant surprise, but also becomes the potential precursor for a\nmemorable concert, and so it was on June 8, 2109 at Mumbai\u2019s St. Andrew\u2019s auditorium,\nthe setting for \u2018Transcendence 2.0\u2019, a sequel of sorts to last year\u2019s inaugural\nevent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Opening the disparate and, yet, dual tributes to jazz pianist\nOscar Peterson and to Carnatic violinist T. Chowdiah, was keyboardist Louiz\nBanks, backed by Gino Banks on drums and Gianluca Liberatore on acoustic bass.\nThe trio ran through select tracks from the Canadian pianist\u2019s career,\nincluding a rendition of George Gershwin\u2019s \u201cSummertime\u201d, from the 1935 opera \u2018Porgy\nAnd Bess\u2019, and \u201cWhen I Fall In Love\u201d, among other songs. The performance reiterated\nthat Banks\u2019 talent remains elegant, effortless, and exquisite. The 45-minute\nset not only provided the other band members an opportunity of showcasing their\nrespective talent too, but the coordination between father and son was nothing\nshort of remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a 25-minute interval, it was time for the next part of\nthe concert, the tribute to Chowdiah, as Dr. Mysore Manjunath on violin,\naccompanied by Pt. Yogesh Samsi on tabla and Bangalore Amrit (kanjira), strode\nonto the stage. While the competency of the each of the musicians was notable,\nthe best moment of the half hour set was reserved when all three performed in\nunison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concert ended with the expected finale that had all the\nmusicians present on the stage together, with Louiz Banks leading them into a\nsong called \u201cReunion\u201d, which was loosely based on Raga <em>Chandrakauns<\/em>. The skills of the percussionists was comprehensively displayed\nthen \u2013 in the order of tabla, drums, and kanjira \u2013 with violinist Manjunath\nrecognising their talents with an intermittent \u201caahaa\u201d.
