Asha Khadilkar,Mumbai



Born in Sangli (Maharashtra), Asha started taking vocal classical music lessons under the guidance of the Late Mr Balakrishnabuwa Mohite from the tender age of five. At the age of 13, she gave her first public performance of vocal music.

In 1971, at the age of 15, Asha received the first Bal Gandharva Prize from the hands of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. Subsequently, she started performing on All India Radio.

Asha passed her "Visharad" examination in vocal classical music at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. At one singing competition, Asha received a tanpura as prize from late Smt. Hirabai Barodekar.

After marriage, she moved to Mumbai and started her career in acting also (Marathi musical dramas). She has then been to perform at several concerts to the UK, USA and Canada.

Asha is recognised not just for her classical and light classical music, but also for her light music styles such as Bhajan, Bhavgeet, Thumri, Dadra, etc. Many of such albums have been released by HMV, T-Series, Venus, etc.

From time to time, she has also composed her own bandishis. And given lecture-demonstrations at schools and colleges. Asha has received valuable training also from late Padmashree Mrs Manik Verma, Pt. Shankarrao Abhyankar and late Padmashree Jitendra Abhisheki.
